I just got done modifying my tumbler gears on my south bend 9" wide bed. Ground the shafts down from 5/8" to 15 m/m, bored the gears from 5/8" to 21 m/m waiting for the loctite to dry to try it to see if it quiet them down some. Bearing number hk1512 needle roller bearing.

Hi All:

I've read about every thread on the PM935 mill and every time I think I've nailed down a decision, something changes my mind. What I'm really trying to decide is whether to go with the PM935TS with 3ph and VFD, or the PM935TV single phase. I've read the pros/cons of both.

I was getting quite serious about the single phase TV model, but then keep worrying about things wearing out and the difficulty of replacing bushing and such.

A number of folks on other forums with...

Rebuilding My Logan 820

Been machining for over 30 years, started in the US Navy in 1984. I have always wanted a lathe for my home shop because I quite frankly enjoy making things...
Finally got a deal on a Logan, Model 820 so says the tag but it has a turret instead of the normal tail stock... Does that change its designation? Serial number 42725.
No biggie, First photo is what it looked like when it arrived, second is its current state. I have taken the saddle apart, cleaned everything and reassembled it....

Harbor Freight Engine/shop Crane

All,

I purchased the HF 2-Ton engine/shop crane to lift my new Grizzly G4003G lathe. After putting it together there is a gap between the base and the crane post. This gap is there because the spring bars in the back were too short. I researched this and read that it is done this way intentionally to "pre-load" the spring bars. Now, the gap is on the side facing the load, so that is better than in the rear I would think, but it still has me concerned. Is this crane safe like...

I've looked at VDs and have a basic grasp from the block schematics that abound on the web. But I'm trying to get a bit deeper, in particular, , the DC voltage that is made by the rectifier.
Is it a low voltage eg 12V ) or a high voltage (eg 220V).
I suppose that I could try measuring it , but I'd like to get some better education before I unbutton the box - or preferably without unbuttoning the box.

Machinist Test

I thought you might enjoy seeing the machinist test from where I used to work. T View attachment 120355 he material is stress-proof, all the dimensions are + or - .001 except the diameter of the nut which is given as a 76 mm K-6 fit, and the taper is required to have 90% contact. When I took the test the passing score was 90%. About a year after I retired the company lowered the requirement to 80% because they couldn't find enough people who could pass. I took the test 3 times...

Hello Gentlemen:

I have a problem that you may be able to help me with. Not too long ago, I purchased a Grizzly 9X12 Mini Lathe and when trying to do some turning and parting, the Top Slide seems to bounce on occasion. I have honed the Gibbs and Slides and have adjusted the Gibbs for proper setting to me?? I have also tightened the rotating adjustment as tight as adjustable but still some movement. It is very annoying!!

Any suggestions Gentlemen??

Thank you,

Ron, w6br

Help Needed: Clausing 111 Power Crossfeed Key.

Hi all, I need some help. (quips about my insanity are un-needed, my wife makes plenty of them)

I have a 12 inch clausing 111 lathe. It has a power crossfeed run off the lead screw, unfortunately I don't believe that I inserted the key correctly because about the third time I ran the lathe it came out and was mangled beyond recognition. So two years later now that I actually have a use for the function I have a question: how is it retained? The PDF manual I have calls it a 1/8 by 1/8...

A while back I decided that a small horizontal mill had worked it's way up to the top of the list of new additions to the shop. After looking in all the usual places, my search netted me a Burke 126A#4 horizontal mill that was in pretty good shape. It has a 4"x16" table, power feed, and a small foot print. It basically has everything a small home/hobby shop could ask for in a horizontal...

Gear Making

I made my very first gears yesterday!! They are for a sheet metal "slip-roll". The Bridgeport worked pretty well, I set the cutter speed at 135 rpm and played with the power feed on the X axis until it seemed to be cutting well, not too fast and not too slow. It still took a while to do the 4 gears at 14 teeth each.

Pm 727 - Bearing Squeal?

The last couple of times that I have used my mill, I have been hearing an intermittent squealing sound that varies with spindle speed. After the bearings going out on my PM1127VF-LB lathe motor in less than a year, I am suspect of a similar situation with a bearing inside the head. I am 99.9% sure it isn't the motor bearings as the squeal changes with respect to spindle speed, and the motor runs at a constant speed. I also don't think it is coming from the spindle. I believe it is going...

G0768 Or G4000?

Hi everyone, first real post here. Enjoying a little machining on a Sherline has led to some headaches with size issues, so I'm ready to buy a bigger bench top lathe.

I'll be turning mostly brass rod and Delrin rod, 7-8 inches in length for most work. I imagine some longer work might be necessary sometime, but only on other projects that I dream up. For now, my focus is on brass and plastic. Occasionally I'll turn steel to make reamers or other cutting tools, but again, length shouldn't...

Hello, my name is Jack, posting from California. I'm not really a machinist *yet* but I want to be. My background is mostly in woodworking, but I know how to use a hacksaw and a file too.

Currently I'm taking classes in mechanical engineering. I like all the math and science but I want to learn how the "real world" works too - so right now I'm taking physics and chemistry, but also a SolidWorks class and a MasterCAM class. I've done a little drafting and modeling before so I'm pretty...
