Tula Revolver

Hi All,

One of my old neighbors got in touch with me about some work he needed done, and while I was happy to do it for free, he presented me with my 'payment.'

It's a 1938 Tula revolver. An interesting design, as it fires 7.62x38R cartridges. The bullet is actually pushed into the casing, which protrudes from the cylinder once loaded. The cocking mechanism pushes the cylinder forward against the barrel, and the end of the casing flares into it, creating...

"proper" Way To Store Drills In An Index (?)

A tool maker named "Wally" (Bob Waller) picked up a Harbor Freight 29 pc. fractional drill set that was setting on my desk. He looked at the drills, looked at me, dumped them in the trash and left with my index. He came back with the index full of cryo bits. I asked why he put them in the index up side down. Wally always put drill bits in the index with the shank end up for a couple of reasons. First, if you burr up the shank by spinning a bit in the chuck, it still goes back in the...

What's the proper name for these bits!

I bought several of these along with a handful of square end bits for $1.00 each at a flea market.

This one is 5/16” on the small end and exactly what I needed to countersink 5/16" cap screws. I'd love to have several more sizes but can't seem to find them. I tried searching for step bits but the only results were the cone shaped bits for step drilling holes in sheet metal.

Thanks for any feedback.

Blast Cabinet Nozzle

I have a TP Tools blast cabinet and have been using their ceramic nozzles for years. They also sell a regular steel nozzle that doesn't last as long as the ceramic as well as a carbide nozzle that's supposed to last 30 times longer than ceramic. ($50.00 each tho). I couldn't be happier with the quality of the TP blaster but I am going to make my own nozzles on the lathe. I was thinking of turning down some grade 8 bolt stock just like the nozzles and maybe heat treating them when done. How...

Hello...I'm from southwestern Pa. (just a lil north of Washington, Pa.). I'm looking to add to my metal working arsenal. I started a few years ago with a mig welder (miller 211), then some oxy/acet torches (smith), followed by a small plasma cutter (hypertherm), and a mitering bandsaw (femi). the most recent addition was a 1950,s delta metal cutting vertical bandsaw (loved restoring it, and it cuts great). So, with that said, Im now looking to add either a lathe or milling machine. Ive...

This is a new thread that I am starting. As the good weather of Spring and Summer rolls around, many of us will go back to the shop to do something. We want to know what you did in your shop today. No limits, just tell us what you did.

Today in my shop, I am installing some shelves using 8x10 brackets I got from Home Depot and some 2x4 sheets of 3/4" MDF I also bought there.

First Snow...

This year, I plunked down $800 for a snowblower over at Lowe's (Troybilt 2490 Storm).

We hadn't had any snow, but I suspected we were in for some real soon. I never used a snowblower before, but this fall, I bought a Troybilt 2840 Storm over at Lowe's, and an Eagle 5 gallon gas can. Never had any experience with gas engines. This afternoon, I gassed her up and tried her out. Second pull, she started up and the drive yanked me out of my shoes down the driveway.

Tonight, comes the snow....a...

I'm just getting into metal work and would like to attend shows or classes in the Atlanta area. How do I find where and when those shows/classes are held? Is there a particular search text I can use in Google?

Thanks,

Has anyone done a belt drive conversion on this mill? Seriously considering this mill over pm25 but would want to have the belt drive feature to up the rpm a bit. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Difficult Machine Bolts On Lathe Chuck

Hi all,
I have been tearing down an old cushman 12" lathe chuck and 6 bolts don't want to budge (even with my trusty impact gun). They appear to go thru with a funky looking back - that may be a nut? Any ideas? What type of driver would I use? I'm being gentle and want to avoid the "bigger hammer" method of disassembly. Here's a pic. View attachment 120537

What Is Original Colour For A Colchester Dominion?

I have a Colchester 13x36 Dominion lathe and would like to clean it up since it is pretty sad looking right now. It was painted grey but a lot of that has flaked off. Under the grey is a light green that is a bit of a creamy colour and under the light green on the upper, it is a dark green. I have heard about them being two-toned but the dark green under the light seems to me that it was all one colour.

But then I was thinking as I looked at the rests that I have. One has the darker green...

Another Lathe Dro Install

I just finished the installation of a set of iGaging DigiMag DRO's on my G0602 lathe. I chose the iGaging because of their ability to fit the lathe without loss of machining capability and being able to install them with serious modification of the OEM lathe. They also work with Yuriy's TouchDRO ap for Android devices.

I used a 6" scale for the tailstock, a 12" scale for the cross slide, and a 24" scale for the Z axis. The 6 and 12 inch scales were trimmed to fit. The 24" scale had...

The New South Bend 10K

I am seriously considering the new South Bend 10K. It is certainly not a bargain and I feel it should come with more at the current price. Nevertheless, it looks like an excellent small lathe.
I would definitely need to add a DRO. Has anyone recently put a DRO on a similar lathe? What kind of DRO should I be looking at? Magnetic or other? Can anyone give some specifics about attachment points for the encoders?
I will also probably add a brake. This may be self designed or I may swap out the...

Yet Another Light for the Mini Mill

I have tried several different lights: incandescent, florescent, and LED, and have not been happy with any of them, so I build my own.

It is based on an Alpena SpotLite, dual LED package from Auto Zone. http://www.autozone.com/lighting/led-lighting/alpena-led-spot-lite/111799_0_0/

I want this to work for both milling and drilling, to avoid being blocked by the drill chuck, the LEDs need to be mounted on arms and aimed at an appropriate angle that...
