Tachometer Mount for MV100 Mill

$

When I bought it, my MV100 mill didn't come with the tachometer that was supposed to be mounted in the head cover. This is a bit of an annoyance with the Reeve's drive setup in this machine. I happened to find a nice old Stewart-Warner tach at an estate sale a while later, but was disappointed to discover that it didn't quite fit the hole in the head, and I never really got around to turning the right bushing on the lathe. Finally, over the weekend I measured everything up, threw some CAD...

Rockford/Hedwick MV100 power table feed install

More than a few years ago I purchased my Rockford MV100 mill it came with the factory table feed but it was non-working, my intent was to someday get it working but the more I thought about what was required (it lacked the engage lever and had something homemade) I started looking at a Bridgeport style power feed but wasn't sure how it would work and what was needed to make it work on my mill. The end plate that comes with the standard unit was designed to work with the 4 hole Bridgeport...

12" Atlas Reverse Tumbler Gear Stud

Just got a 12" Craftsman/Atlas, going through it and making it usable.

Regarding the two smaller single gears - were the nuts on the back side staked? I took the assembly apart for cleaning, and there doesn't seem to be any provision for keeping the nut from tightening all the way against the casting. There's a shoulder on the stud where it meets the front of the tumbler casting, but not on the back.

Also, why does the headstock pulley have indexing holes, just like the bull gear?

How to machine a circle when it isn't

I'm working on making a panel to mount Aviation-style connectors for my CNC mill conversion.

The ideal cutout would be a circle with two flats on it on opposite sides. See pic.

How do I do this on a manual mill?

Improving cheap drill press, maybe?

So after drilling many less than accurate holes on my cheap floor model drill press and using an even cheaper HF drill press vice. I started to look how to improve my chances.

I replaced the factory chuck with an older Jacobs 1/2 inch keyed chuck and that improved the run out substantially.

Then looking at the cheap HF vice there was nothing on it flat or square so to the mill it went, and with milling and new jaws that vice is now fairly flat within a thou or two, and that's ok for my...

Don't remember if there is an existing thread like this. Many of you guys like to share your scores so let's try a new ongoing thread...

If your here chances are you love tools & always love to get new ones. This thread is not necessarily for gloating (well maybe) but you can if you want but expect to get a "you suck" compliment!

So what did you buy for the shop today (or recently)? No tool too small or too big, machines, equipment, inexpensive, expensive, good deal or not, whatever. All...

Atlas/Craftsman Serial Numbers and Bearing Dates

I hadn't previously noticed it probably because looking back I see that almost all age related questions the past year have been for 12". In the combined machine database (408 entries to date) there are only 74 10" entries, a third of which show no serial numbers. And there is a large jump or blank range in the 10" serial numbers. They meander up to a little over 8000 and then skip to over 17000. Plus we only have three supposed bearing dates, one of which does not track with the other...

Air fittings . Big long and short . Small long and short . Bringing in everything from different locals , they're all different . A 30 second job ( blowing out the washer filters ) turned into a 2 hour cluster you know what . From this point on , it's all small diameter long stem . All others are scrap as I won't be doing this again .

Import parting tool holder

If you guys own one of these it’s probably not one your most prized possessions. They do have some problems. I had three choices:
Use it as is (not really an option)
Throw it out (too cheap to do that)
Try and fix it
I tried to fix it. The first thing was to mill a grove in the upper portion of the blade holder slot to accommodate the P-type parting blades. I then added a piece of 1/4” wall aluminum angle along with a brass gib to keep things aligned when tightening the wedge. It actually...

Tested RF 31

Briefly ran the spare RF 31 mill/drill that I have. Cut flat spots on two round pieces as described in the "Malling Parallels" section of Harold Hall's book "Milling a Complete Course". Used a 1/2" HSS roughing mill at 1700 RPM, manual feed, depth of cut o.125 and width 0.150". Some vibration but not excessive. After improving the X axis handle I am still undecided on which mill to use on a permanent basis. If I had a big strong helper it would be the Rung FU at this time.
Have a good day

I was having some problems with machining a longish (for me) shaft on my Atlas 618 and I've chased my tail on alignment issues, so I decided to get an MT2 test bar and figure out what was going on.

Bought this MT2 test bar from Amazon for $28

How strong is square tube slip joint when bolted thru ?

$

I'm planning a project that has very strict space constraints, so i need to design it in couple of pieces so i'm considering using slip joints that will be held by bolts. I've never used them, from what i could find the inside piece that slips in should be double the diameter of the tube. The question is can a bolted slip joint hold like a single piece or do i need to use bigger diameter to compensate and any advice on how to make them easiest, the tube i'm planning is 30x50x3mm.

Carriage Stop for G4003G

I want a Carriage stop to prevent "CRASH". BION Grizzly themselves only has them for their monster lathes. They recommended calling SHARS. No luck there either. My concern is mauling the ways with some junk. Also if it will slip because it is a Gap Bed lathe. Any advice or sources?

About home nickel plating (to recover wear)

First - this is about nickel electroplating with current. Electro-less nickel deposition is a separate thing.

There is a huge available store of knowledge about nickel plating. One only has to trawl the patents.
The usual plating baths use nickel chloride and nickel sulfate with "additives" for all sorts of purposes. Brighteners, buffer solutions, deposition rate regulators, whatever, but the basic transport is the nickel salts. They will be called "proprietary". We send our stuff out to be...

Please take a minute to welcome long time member Yuriy aka @ycroosh - but now as a Commercial member! Yuriy has been a member of H-M since April 2013. He is best known in our circles for the TouchDRO project among other things. I had the privilege of using his software on my Nexus 5 and installed a two axis TouchDRO with iGaging scales on my Taig lathe a couple of years ago. Really fortunate to have somebody of Yuriy's caliber and expertise on the H-M site.
