Design Discussion: High Performance CNC Spindle

I have been doing research on building a high performance spindle for a medium to large size benchtop CNC mill for a few months. I recently found out that @shooter123456 was also working on similar goals and I wanted to create this post to collect information and share ideas. I'm sure he and I have slightly different end goals in mind, so I will try to keep this generic.

Background: Anyone who has converted or built a benchtop CNC (up to RF45/PM-940 size) is likely...

Where to next?

I purchased a "turnkey" CNC PM-25MV from ProCut CNC to make some parts that I had developed. There was much regret in that as the machine had to be torn down and reassembled properly before it was even usable. I will spare the details, just beware of their lack of pride if you choose to deal with them.

A Chinese PM1236 was also purchased (directly from PM) to aid in making said parts. With the exception of replacing some cheap hardware it has served me quite well.

Sales have slowed just...

Convert Gear Diametral Pitch To Module.

Hello there,
I wonder if someone can help me. I have to a gear with 28 teeth and a 1.666"diameter. I want to cut an identical gear. I worked out that it has an 18.05 Diametral pitch. Converting it to module with my calculations it is a 1.4066 modul. My question is: should I use a 1.5 module or am I wrong? To get imperial cutters are very expensive, but the metric are cheaper.
Thank you
Jim

Does anyone know if anyone makes a wnmg holder for smaller lathes 10x22 in a 1/2 inch holder or 12 mm holder I would like to try these especially since one insert has 6 cutting edges but I'm having trouble finding anything under 3/4 thanks for any help :) :) :)

Etching Steel Using a 2.5 watt Diode Laser

I recently purchased five pairs of 1-2-3 blocks. My intention was to use them for setups when machining. They arrived last week and on first inspection, actually looked reasonably good. I want to do more thorough metrology but thought that I should serialize them first.

A carbide scribe could do the job but the ridges that would result would have to be removed. My thinking turned to electrochemical etching. The process that I used was coating the work with a resist and scribing through...

Preferred spotting for drilled holes?

I run a smaller CNC and would like to preset a single tool to handle most or all of my spotting work. When doing general drilling I have always used a small center drill, but need to run high RPM's and find it doesn't clear chips well. I see NC spotting drills for sale in angles ranging from 90 degrees to 150 degrees. What would you recommend for a general purpose spot drill?

What's the best way to clean this up?

I acquired this as part of one of the collections of random machinist tools I have. It may actually have come from my father in-laws set.

Everything functions smoothly, it has a nice feel to it. However the surface rust has made it pretty much useless. I had set it aside with the idea of some day bringing it back to usable condition. I like old tools and would actually use this if I could read it.

What's the best approach to clean it up?
Any advice on how to bring it back to life?

Looking at a used Kurt vise.
Seller says this about it...and has some pictures and it appears to have new paint.
is asking $275
Used Kurt D675 precision vice. New thrust washers and needle bearing. Mating surfaces have been honed.

Serial number #64764
Any way to judge the age from this number?

Russian Boring Head...

OK, so I was buying some drill bits and a chuck from someone on Facebook Marketplace, and he brought along this boring head "kit" (although they didn't know that the parts all went together.

No markings!

Stainless. Uses a screw head (for adjusting) that I've never seen. It's hex, but tapered. Starts out at 3mm, gets larger (close to 3.75mm) at the bottom.
There's a cover that you ran rotate to cover/protect the adjustment screw. (at least that's my best guess)

I'm guessing this boring...

This is just incredible! Precision spindle repairs have been clan secrets among the pros in the business. Robin Renzetti sets it free here. Amazingly fine work with strict care to follow best practices, and more. Who says we cannot 'properly' rebuild our own spindles???

I was having some problems with machining a longish (for me) shaft on my Atlas 618 and I've chased my tail on alignment issues, so I decided to get an MT2 test bar and figure out what was going on.

Bought this MT2 test bar from Amazon for $28

Help trouble shooting a HF 125

Hi,
I was using my HF 125 today and all of a sudden it stopped working. My original thought was that maybe it had over heated some how. I had done 4 tacks and then about an inch long bead. Power on max and wire feed on four.

I have done the bridge rectifier/capacitor modification. The welder powers on. The fan runs. When I push the switch I hear a click and a buzzing sound. The wire does not feed. When I touch the wire to what I am welding there is a tiny spark.

Where do I start to...

Tramming

Hello - I have a Johannson A37 (Clausing 8520). Does anyone have a hint on adjusting the nod other than disassembling and shimming - rinse and repeat. My head was out .030. I have it down to .003 - .004. but it sure is a lot of work to take the entire head off each time. Has anyone ever come up with adjustable spacers?
Thanks in advance!

Fellow close by has this for sale , I read in the Clausing paperwork that they had a 8" rotary table , I can't see what harm having the extra 2" be ? Maybe issues bolting it down ?
