Compressor Preservation

Does anyone have info on a Perservative/cleaner that you could spray(?) into your tank after draining all the crud and corruption? It would have to be "clean-out-able" as I don't want to contaminate all the filters and regulators.

As long as I can remember my Mom and Dad and Granny would read to me. They instilled in me a need to know. A thirst for Knowledge that has never stopped.
With that in mind, I am going to post some quotes and sayings that made me think.

I'm a journeyman machinist / toolmaker of 43 years now . I don't ask many questions regarding this . I'm a newbie - 5 years when it comes to electrical stuff . We in the trade refer this as SES . Secret electrical $hit . I have no " E " in my website name , make note . Yes I can wire up a socket , but industrial stuff scares me .

My point . I have some vintage electrical things that I would love to have repaired . I google and get not so many results on the matter . As an old timer I do...

4-Jaw is completed

So the 4-jaw is completed.
First let me say that I hate cast iron. What a mess.

I took my time and eased up into the register diameter. Fits like a piston.
Total runout is about 3 thou. Being that it's a 4-jaw that's good for my needs.

One thing I'm not happy about is that that when turning it to final diameter I broke through the counterbores for the mounting bolts.
Shars sells the cuck and backing pate as a pair so I would have expected that the bores would be sized so this wouldn't...

Hafco AL900A lathe, is anyone able to identify what it really is?

Hello all.

I have bought a lathe in Outback Australia and would like to try and identify it and get a handbook.

It claims to be a HAFCO AL900A, which could mean it is a Shun Shin (Taiwan) lathe circa 1980 to 1985.
The same manufacturer also appears to have supplied nameplates in a dog's breakfast selection of
brands. Possibly Herless, Pacific, Enco etc. But I have yet to find any with those name plates that have
the same appearance, close yes, the same no.

See photo attached. Noteworthy...

Just learning the lathe, and made a little clutch disc thickness measuring tool. This is for high maintenance, adjustable type performance sintered iron clutch discs to monitor clutch wear. I don't know what ACE has for set screws, so I still have to drill, and tap it. Kinda plane Jane looking, gotta get a knurling tool. Oh, and I made a round nose HSS tool too....

Boring bar holder

Just finished another project and thought I would share. I made a boring bar holder for my Craftsman 101.21200 (618) lathe, so now I can use 1/2", 5/8" or 3/4" boring bars. I modeled it after an old Armstrong holder.

PM-30 Conversion project

I know there are several threads here concerning people's experience with buying and converting a PM030mv to CNC using the Centroid Acorn platform. I have read through many of them. I am very new to the conversion process and the equipment required to do such. Is there a good one stop source for what's commonly accepted as required? Ex: what power rated steppers are needed, suggested, overkill, for each axis? Which CNC conversion kit is preferred Arizona99? ProCutCNC?

This is just incredible! Precision spindle repairs have been clan secrets among the pros in the business. Robin Renzetti sets it free here. Amazingly fine work with strict care to follow best practices, and more. Who says we cannot 'properly' rebuild our own spindles???

Tramming

Hello - I have a Johannson A37 (Clausing 8520). Does anyone have a hint on adjusting the nod other than disassembling and shimming - rinse and repeat. My head was out .030. I have it down to .003 - .004. but it sure is a lot of work to take the entire head off each time. Has anyone ever come up with adjustable spacers?
Thanks in advance!

Posting this up for reference. might or might not come in handy.
Looks like it was a well used hydraulic repair shop. I didn't get good vibes off how the auction company had setup the lots.
I was kind of hoping the Keller saw would go cheap. Some items did.
I managed to capture the 'hammer' prices using the second browser trick I started trying last week.

Help trouble shooting a HF 125

Hi,
I was using my HF 125 today and all of a sudden it stopped working. My original thought was that maybe it had over heated some how. I had done 4 tacks and then about an inch long bead. Power on max and wire feed on four.

I have done the bridge rectifier/capacitor modification. The welder powers on. The fan runs. When I push the switch I hear a click and a buzzing sound. The wire does not feed. When I touch the wire to what I am welding there is a tiny spark.

Where do I start to...

Etching Steel Using a 2.5 watt Diode Laser

I recently purchased five pairs of 1-2-3 blocks. My intention was to use them for setups when machining. They arrived last week and on first inspection, actually looked reasonably good. I want to do more thorough metrology but thought that I should serialize them first.

A carbide scribe could do the job but the ridges that would result would have to be removed. My thinking turned to electrochemical etching. The process that I used was coating the work with a resist and scribing through...

Pushed out the stock stud. Milled down the mount to 0.15" tall. Drilled 12.5mm and tapped to 14mm. Bored out a hole 0.15" on the QCTP to match the mount. Works great!

Toolpost tantrum

Well not a tantrum but I wanted the alliteration :)

So I rise early, the temperature has warmed up so I can work in my barely heated garage. I set up to measure the toolpost slot, the toolpost blank and all is good.

I set out to cut to width using a hacksaw. 6,318 strokes later it’s cut to width.

Next task is to mark the cutout to fit the ‘T’. One side all marked. 5,189 strokes later (new blade you see) and one side is cut.

Next up, mark the other side. Measure, mark, carefully snug...

Starrett micrometer fix

I found what I thought was a great deal on a little used Starrett T230RL 1" micrometer. It had some old gunk on it, so I thought that was why the spindle was sticky when turned. I took the spindle out, cleaned and degreased everything, and it is still so tight I can't use the ratchet.

Upon looking at it, it appears the spindle lock mechanism isn't retracting enough and is dragging on the spindle. It will turn to a stop and lock the spindle, but it will spin all the way around the other...
