What the heck?

I sent an email to Shars telling them that the backplate in the 4-jaw chuck & backplate package is not well matched.

The counterbores for the mounting bolts are too large which means that when you turn down the outside diameter to match the chuck, the edges of the counterbores are exposed.

Below is their response:

“David
The OD of the backplate is not designed to be turned down due to the bolt circle pattern. The bolt circle is a set dimension that can not be changed on the chuck and...

I purchased a "turnkey" CNC PM-25MV from ProCut CNC to make some parts that I had developed. There was much regret in that as the machine had to be torn down and reassembled properly before it was even usable. I will spare the details, just beware of their lack of pride if you choose to deal with them.

A Chinese PM1236 was also purchased (directly from PM) to aid in making said parts. With the exception of replacing some cheap hardware it has served me quite well.

Sales have slowed just...

What to Add to Arbor Press Stand?

I finally finished my arbor press stand, but for the paint. I left it unpainted because I am thinking of adding features, and it's better to weld and then paint than to paint and then weld.

What should I add to this thing? I've seen little bins on on the fronts of manufactured stands, where, I assume, they are supposed to catch broaches. I was thinking of adding one, but it seems like it's a bad idea unless it's detachable, because it would get in the way when I need to put long objects...

Russian Boring Head...

OK, so I was buying some drill bits and a chuck from someone on Facebook Marketplace, and he brought along this boring head "kit" (although they didn't know that the parts all went together.

No markings!

Stainless. Uses a screw head (for adjusting) that I've never seen. It's hex, but tapered. Starts out at 3mm, gets larger (close to 3.75mm) at the bottom.
There's a cover that you ran rotate to cover/protect the adjustment screw. (at least that's my best guess)

I'm guessing this boring...

Lo-Fi's dividing head calculator

Not your usual project here, I know, but I got fed up with using incomplete charts and manually figuring out what I can and can't divide with the plates I have, so I've been coding up a calculator!

You feed it a list of hole patterns you have available and the ratio of your dividing head, then what you want to divide and it'll tell you if it's possible, which plate to choose and how many turns/holes. If there are multiple solutions, it'll list them. The really clever stuff is yet to come -...

Boring a hole for a magazie tube

OK guys I need to bore (cut, route) a hole (channel) in a piece of walnut for a magazine tube on a forearm blank for a winchester 1886 rifle. The forearm is going to be 19 inches long. how have you done it before or how would you go about it. The hole needs to be in the area of .720-.730 . I've seen some round 1/2", 5/8" burrs, was thinking of milling it in after the barrel channel was cut and then reaming it the final diameter....what do you folks think.

What size inserts

I acquired this unmarked indexable face mill in a lot of tools. Can anyone please tell me how I can figure out what triangular inserts to buy?

Arbor dia. 3/4”
Body dia. 1-7/16”
Best guess for width of 1 side of insert: around 5/8” to 11/16”
Insert recess depth: 1/8”
Best guess for insert IC: 3/8

would any other info be helpful?

Thanks!
